The Little Miami Joint Fire & Rescue District was formed February 1, 2003 with the merge of the Newtown Fire Department and The Fairfax/Madison Place Joint Fire and Rescue Department. This was a time of change and a time for it to remain the same.

For a clearer understanding of the history of the “Joint Fire District”, read the chronological timeline.

TIMELINE:

April 1, 1991 | April 1, 1994 | January 1,1996 February 1, 2003 | January 1, 2004 | TODAY

April 1, 1991:
University Paramedic Service begins to provide advanced life support to the residents of the villages of Fairfax and Mariemont and Eastern Districts of Columbia Township. The contract provided two paramedics 24 hours a day/ 7 day coverage for 3 years. This was to allow the communities to work toward a joint fire district and provide paramedic service on their own.

April 1, 1994:
Eastern Emergency Joint Ambulance District (EEJAD) is created to provide paramedic service in place of University Paramedic Service. The service is staffed by part-time personnel 24 hours a day and 7 days a week.

January 1, 1996:
The Fairfax/ Madison Place Joint Fire and Rescue District is formed to provide 24 hour/7 day a week coverage for the Village of Fairfax and the Eastern District of Columbia Township.  Prior to the formation of the joint district the Village of Fairfax was covered by the Fairfax Fire Department staffed with all volunteer firefighters and emergency medical technicians (EMT). Columbia Township was covered by the Madison Place Fire Department Inc. a non-profit private fire company, which also was staffed by all volunteer firefighters and emergency medical technicians.  The Fairfax/ Madison Place Joint Fire and Rescue District is established as a combination department, full-time, part-time and paid on call firefighter/EMT’s.  EEJAD continues to provide advance life support for the fire district and the Village of Mariemont.  The full-time employees include a Chief, an Assistant Chief, and Shift Captains.  The staffing is supplemented by part-time Firefighters/EMT with staffing increased by paid on call coverage in the evenings.

February 1, 2003:
The Little Miami Joint Fire & Rescue District is formed by the merging of the Newtown Fire Department and the Fairfax/ Madison Place Joint Fire and Rescue Department.  The Village of Newtown joined the fire district to increase experience, provide paramedic service within the fire district eliminating the need to contract with Anderson Township, and guarantee 24 hour/ 7 days a week coverage for the citizens of Newtown.

January 1, 2004:
The Little Miami Joint Fire & Rescue District provides Advanced Life Support, paramedic service to all residents of the fire district.  Paramedics are assigned to each station.
